Copyright and permissions

Effective and last updated:

Scope of the claim

This notice concerns qualifying original expression in the game, which may include original source code, written copy, artwork, and protectable creative selection or arrangement of interface elements, to the extent owned by Thomas Beamshooter. It is a notice of a rights claim, not a copyright registration, a certificate of authorship, or a representation that every element is independently copyrightable.

We do not claim copyright in English words, facts, a general theme or color palette, names or titles, game ideas, rules or methods of play, algorithms as abstract procedures, standard functional interface patterns, public-domain material, or rights belonging to others. Statutory exceptions, including fair use where applicable, are preserved.

Playing, results, and commentary

You may play the game, use its built-in result sharing, and include reasonable screenshots and excerpts in reviews, commentary, teaching, and discussion. Please identify HANGWORD and link to hangword.com where practical. This permission does not imply endorsement or authorize misleading affiliation.

For republishing protected source code or artwork, a commercial adaptation of protected material, or other use outside these permissions and applicable law, request written permission at sec@beamshooter.com. Publicly delivered browser code is not, solely because it is visible or downloadable, granted a general open-source license.

Third-party rights take precedence for their material

The ENABLE1 dictionary is public domain. Wordfreq-derived frequency and difficulty data is distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Font files have their own open font licenses. These materials may be used under their respective terms; this notice and the terms of use do not add restrictions to those licenses. See credits and licenses for attribution, files, and license links.

Names and branding

HANGWORD and STACKWORD are names used to identify this service and its modes. This notice does not assert a registered trademark, a completed trademark-clearance search, or exclusive rights in those words. All third-party rights are reserved. Do not falsely suggest that another product is operated, sponsored, or approved by us.

About copyright protection

Under United States law, copyright can arise automatically when qualifying original human expression is fixed. A notice does not create ownership of an idea or replace registration and its separate legal benefits. General references: U.S. Copyright Office basics and games and copyright.
