ENABLE1 dictionary — public domain
The Enhanced North American Benchmark LExicon was compiled by Alan Beale and M. Cooper and maintained by M. Cooper. Its public-domain notice permits use and redistribution of the word list. The game uses a filtered edition, excluding entries on our word-filter list. We do not claim ownership of English words or restrict redistribution of the underlying dictionary.
Retained ENABLE notice · Filtered game dictionary · Original dictionary source mirror.
Word filter — CC BY 4.0
The filter is based on the English List of Dirty, Naughty, Obscene, and Otherwise Bad Words (LDNOOBW), © 2012–2020 Shutterstock, Inc. and contributors, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. We normalize complete alphabetic entries, join alphabetic phrases, and supplement the list with explicit additional variants. We use complete-word matching rather than matching parts of ordinary words.

Word familiarity and difficulty data — CC BY-SA 4.0
English word-frequency values were derived from wordfreq 3.1.1 by Robyn Speer. Its frequency data and our derived frequency and difficulty exports are distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Wordfreq’s source code has a separate Apache 2.0 license; the wordfreq runtime is not included in the game.
Our changes look up English frequency values for ENABLE1 entries of two to six letters and use those values with verified, bounded solution-search counts to calculate provisional puzzle ratings. Foundation-word familiarity is excluded. No source books, posts, or other corpus passages are redistributed.
The retained notice credits the underlying sources, including the SUBTLEX authors, OpenSubtitles, Google Books Ngrams, Wikipedia, ParaCrawl, and the Leeds Internet Corpus, and preserves the original source and research attributions. SUBTLEX remains freely available data. Reuse of the licensed data must retain required attribution, identify changes, and use the same license for adaptations as the license requires.
Full frequency-data attribution · Public difficulty export. These data licenses do not by themselves license the surrounding application code, artwork, or names.
Fonts — SIL Open Font License 1.1
DM Sans and Manrope are third-party typefaces distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. We serve unmodified font files from this site rather than requesting them from Google Fonts. Copyright statements and the full license for each font are retained with the files.
DM Sans copyright and license · Manrope copyright and license · Font source records.
